There are many great reasons why you should venture into West Liberty.
West Liberty is an active, growing, and diverse community
Our community is made up of families that have been here for several generations and new transplants to our community. People have moved here from all over the state, country, and even the world. We have residents from Latin America, Asia, Europe, and Africa. Ever since the town was established, there has been a Latino population and it has been growing ever since. With a Hispanic/Latino population of 52%, it’s safe to say that we have a bilingual community. Our citizens are very active in the community. There are several active community volunteer groups in West Liberty and there is a strong spirit of volunteerism. The brick streets in the historic downtown are even paved by citizens who volunteered.
West Liberty schools provide a first rate education
West Liberty High School was ranked the eighth best high school in Iowa according to US News “Best High Schools 2013 Rankings”. The West Liberty Community School District has a Dual Language Program for K-12 students that enables them to take classes in both English and Spanish. This lets students earn a Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera in addition to their high school diplomas. Besides academics, the school offers a wide variety of extracurriculars including sports, FFA, choir, and band.
West Liberty has a lot to offer
From the historic New Strand Theater downtown, to the Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre Company, to the West Liberty Golf and Country Club, there’s plenty to do here in West Liberty. There are eight city parks which include a veterans memorial, a pool, a skate park, an athletic complex, walking trails, and much more. There’s also Heritage Park which is run by the Heritage Foundation. Located at the 100+ year old train depot, it consists of a museum showcasing West Liberty’s railroad history, a one room schoolhouse, a steam engine, a caboose, a barn from the 1920s, and a cabin that used to be part of a hotel like complex.
West Liberty always has something going on
From the Muscatine County Fair in July, to the Holiday Open House in November, to Music in the Park in summer, to WLAAC’s community art classes in February, to the Children’s Festival in September, something is always going on in West Liberty. There’s never a weekend with nothing to do and with activities for both children and adults, you’ll never be bored.
City vs. small town? West Liberty offers the best of both worlds
With a population of approximately 4,000, West Liberty is a small town where you can experience all the benefits a small town has to offer. You can’t walk down the street without meeting someone you know. But West Liberty also has the advantage of being only 18 miles from Iowa City, 22 miles from Muscatine, and 48 miles from the Quad Cities. With major metropolitan areas less than half an hour’s drive away, you can enjoy all the benefits of living in a city while still having the small town community and lower cost of living.
